Primary School Training
Spikezone (Year 4 - 6)
Spikezone is Volleyball Australia’s modified mini-volleyball for primary school kids in years 4-6. This introductory Learn-to-Play activity is a great, non-contact, team sport that is fun, energetic, and helps to develop coordination and socialisation skills.
- Spikezone is played on smaller indoor courts with a lower net height (1.6m - 2m)
- Players train with softer and lighter Spikezone volleyballs
- Less players on court means more action!
Year 6 players have the choice to join Spikezone or StepUp Volley (see below).
StepUp Volley (Year 6 Only)
StepUp Volley is our brand new Junior Training Program open only to Year 6 players. StepUp aims to bridge primary school to high school, giving players the confidence to start their high school volleyball journey at full speed!
- StepUp Volley is played on a standard 9x16m volleyball court
- The net height is lowered (2m - 2.24m) wityh 6 - 9 players a-side
- Players train with softer, standard weight volleyballs
As players mature and enter high school, they will have the opportunity of moving up to our High School Training and possibly other junior programs such as Junior Premier Volleyball League (JPVL) and/or Dragons Academy. See Juniors for information.
More about Spikezone and StepUp
When and where is training?
Training runs during school terms 1 to 4 and also over summer school holidays. You will have the flexibility to sign up on a term-by-term basis. Spikezone is currently held at The Gap SHS only, while StepUp is also run at our other venues. Training time is usually 6pm - 7.15pm for Spikezone, 6pm-7.30pm for StepUp.
Can my child try out/trial for Spikezone or StepUp?
Absolutely! We ask that all newcomers register to try out. If your child will continue for the rest of the term, the first session is payable as part of the term fee. If you decide not to continue after trying out, there is no fee involved for the one trial session attended.
Choosing a session
You can choose a session based on venue and day of the week you can attend. In most cases, once registered you are generally expected to stick with that session for the term.
If you are choosing a session to trial, please choose a day and venue that will suit you for the remainder of the term, as you will usually be expected to attend the same day and venue you trialled.
Can we start mid-season?
Yes, you can register during term provided capacity allows. Fees reduce as the term progresses.
Are there any places left? What if it is full?
At times competition for places can be fierce! To find out if there are places left, attempt to register for your preferred session. If you can't choose your preferred session, it is full. If there are no acceptable sessions, add yourself to the waiting list - places do open up, especially early in the term.
I've registered my child - What now?
Once you have registered, you will receive a welcome email - it may take up to a week. If you are registered, you can attend the next training/trial per your registration, and advise the lead coach that you are there for the first time.
Volleyball Queensland (VQ) Membership
As an affiliate club with Volleyball Queensland, each player must have a current Volleyball Queensland membership to participate in our programs. Spikezone requires a minimum membership level of 'Spikezone', but the member could also have 'Recreational' or 'Full' membership. Following registration for the Junior Program, we will direct you to the Volleyball Queensland membership page, so that you can get that sorted. Please see VQ Membership Requirements for more information.
