Tour Poem - by David Kelly

The tour of 2006 stands outside the gate
We’re all here on time, well almost, Sarahs running late
Mt Gravatts the next stop, only two more to go
We ring up Nina and get the Springhill P.O.
Louie’s on board, we’re all set to roll
But he’s forgotten something and we pay the toll

We arrive in Coffs about quarter to eight
After a quick checkin, we’re now 10 minutes late
We rush all around Coffs with no signs of slowing
After 7 or 8 u-turns, no-one knows where we are going
Many miles later we arrive at the hall
The game is quite tough and finishes two all

The trip into Forster is less then three hours by road
But it takes four and a half from the road works we’re slowed
Still far too early for the games to begin
So we wait at the hotel and go for a swim

We drop the first two sets and come back in five
And passing’s a skill we gonna need to revive
Down to the beach to eat fish and chips in the breeze
And watch while Tommy is climbing palm trees
Down to the beach for our thirsts we must quench
Then back to the cabins for cards and lessons in French

We haven’t been to Newcastle for many a year
While picking Luke up at the airport … “You can’t park that bus here!”
We expect tough opposition and will need our skills in the zone
But where is the hall, directions come by the phone
We lost the match against Newcastle one set to two
So to the pub with the locals, to throw back a few

On the way out, what was that that we past
We’re early for go-karts, it should be a blast
For more then half an hour we wait in suspence
And can you believe it? Tommys broken the fence

We race on the slides, the Kamakazi’s a thrill
We play golf, ride mountains boards and take an odd spill
In Bulli where the “Meals Area Really Satisfying” a banquet will do
Then back to the cabins for a beach side BBQ
We feed lots of birds and play many a game with card
And joke about socks and laugh very hard

The War Museum at Canberra, there’s so much to see
Then off to Belconnen for a quick movie
No signs for the airport, is driving me insane
I think we’re lost, stuff it, lets follow a plane
We pick up the rest of the team after seeing the sights
Then back in our room we re-enact the JonBoy good nights

The first day of games, we only played a few
I really could have one without this dam flu
Division 1 men have no wins other then coin tosses
While the Rec team wind up the day with no losses
With the first day now over, time for some food to devour
But we all are kept waiting by the hour to shower

Last day of competition an everyone’s awake
Tommys 21 birthday, and we all have some cake
Its seventh for the men, winning all of the rest
The mixed play the wrong team, just for a test

Long drawn crossovers, played at fast pace
Nearing exhaustion, results in second place
Back to the hotel for a quick drink or two
And a chance to talk tactics and conduct a reefing review

Farewell to our flyers at about a quarter past dawn
And good bye to Canberra much later that morn
A seemingly long trip to Dubbo with games to play still
We are tired and exhausted, but push for five-nil
Back at half the hotel, is the room where we stay
Noodles for tea, and cars into cups we do play

Ten days of volleyball just isn’t enough
And the road to Tenterfeild gets rather rough
We play against the locals and put on a show
Then break into teams and teach as we go

Sixteen years of touring, the body gets old
But the memories linger, so the stories can be told
It’s been a long ten days since this tour has begun
And I hope that you all, like me, have had lots of fun.
