History

Whoa! What is all this?

There's a lot of stuff here that non-members may find boring.

Oh well, this section is mostly for our own use. Our recollections from the past years tend to be quite sketchy, (all our records have been filed in a very safe place). So now whenever we think of something we put it in here. This way our members, (the ol' timers that is), can look in here and think back to times gone by.

In the Beginning

1987

Dragons Volleyball Club was started by David and Peter Kelly in 1987. They entered one mens team in Division 2 of the Brisbane Metro League.

1988

Look in the X-Files for information about 1988. (Wasn't there a World Expo here that year?)

1989

More mystery surrounds the clubs activities in 1989.

1990

  • Dragons, Arrows, Griffith Uni, Wests join to form Westside Rebels Volleyball Association.
  • Performed volleyball demonstration inside Centenary Shopping Centre.

1991

This is a big year for Dragons. Becoming an Association, entering Div 1, forming junior teams, hosting our own tournament, going on our first tour, (if only we had more details written down).

  • Innaugural Flaming Chalice Tournament held.
  • Coffs Harbour Tournament.
  • First tour SEQ
  • Dragons Volleyball Club leaves Rebels and forms Dragons Volleyball Association.

1992

  • Dragons Women win Division 3 Good Neighbour Tournament in Canberra. The mens team achieves third place in Div 2.
  • U18 State Titles
  • Hosted Coca Cola Schools Cup at QEII Stadium.
  • End of year celebrations at Robertson Gardens.

1993

  • Dragons Run a mixed 4's beach Volleyball competition at Jindalee All Sports.
  • Dragons hosts a visiting Junior Womens team from Lorraine County, Cleveland, USA. We have a great time together and make many new friends.
  • Dragons Men dominate Division 2 winning every season.
  • Innaugural Soccer and Softball Barbecue. Proving we can do more than just play volleyball. Some of our members prove how hard their heads are by knocking each other out in the Soccer.
  • Dragons become Division 2 Club Champions scoring 124%
  • Voted Affiliate of the Year by Queensland Volleyball Association
  • Dragon's tour NSW: Coffs Harbour, Newcastle, North Ryde, Canberra.
  • The mens team again achieves third place in Div 2 at the Good Neighbour Tournament.
  • End of year celebrations at Centenary Lodge.

1994

  • Thanks to the perserverence of Michael Deakin, Dragons is Incorporated under the Associations Act and becomes Dragons Volleyball Asociation, Inc.
  • Dragons starts a Division 3 competition at Camira.
  • Dragons starts the Dragons Lair, Division 2 Mens and Womens competitions.
  • Dragons Men and Women enter the World Masters Games and both teams achieve 9th place.
  • Grafton Jacaranda Mixed Tournament: A clean sweep with 1st, 2nd and 3rd!
  • Another Soccer and Softball Barbecue. Even bigger than '94.
  • Dragon's tour NSW (again): Coffs Harbour, Dubbo, Katoomba, Canberra. Great views of the Blue Mountains and the Three Sisters are marred only be the complete lack of visibility in the fog.
  • Dragons Men Division 2 win at the Good Neighbour Tournament in Canberra. The womens team achieves a highly commendable third place in Div 2.
  • End of year celebrations at the Greek Community Centre.

1995

  • We start the new year with a pilgrimage to South Golden Beach. We celebrate new year with a bonfire on the beach. Some of our members risk life and limb climbing to the top of Mount Warning to watch the first sunrise of 1995.
  • 18-19th February: Shado's Red-Light Tournament. Men 1st, Women 3rd.
  • 30th March: An U19 Mens team tours Brisbane from Boulder, Colorado, USA. We play an invitational match and are just outclassed by the visitors.
  • 1-2nd April: Maryborough CQL Tournament. Men 1st, Women 1st.
  • 8-9th April: Redlands SEQ Tournament. Women 1st, Men 2nd.
  • Labour Day: Dragons Flaming Chalice. Men A 1st, Women A 2nd, Men B ?, Women B 1st
  • Reserve Men take Silver in the BVL losing to Norths in five sets.
  • Another eventful Soccer and Softball Barbecue, next year we'll buy a rule book.
  • Dec 4th - 13th Another successful tour. Coff's Harbour, Port Maquarie, Central Coast, Sydney and Canberra
  • Dragons Men Division 2 again win the Good Neighbour Tournament in Canberra. We should have played Div 1 after all.
  • End of year celebrations at the Sheraton.
